At the opening, the old fable had found a reception desk. One woman was the doctor, another the nurse-receptionist, selling wings, buttocks, breath and virility from six patient files. I overheard someone wondering whether pets made almost human would, given agency, come closer to us or move away.
Take one old story orally.
Trevorah’s silver patients refuse an answer. Ambrose has the race lengthened out of him, then turns his tortoise shell into a bath. Leo, bred into breathlessness, asks for air. Dolly takes wings, red lips and raised hooves: an original made by adding to the copy.
Continue until breathing improves.
The clinic never says sex. It says contour, ascension and virility. Cleopatra receives a BBL; Ysabel carries augmented breasts beneath her travelling kingdom; Osbert bears four phallic uprights. The paperwork remains decorous. The bodies do not.
Desire only as directed.
The patient cards are the show’s fenestrae and its fence. They open each body, then sometimes close it with explanation. Spoken aloud by the performers, the clinical language begins to slip. Consent arrives preformatted. Freedom acquires a recovery score.
Consent may alter the patient.
I kept returning to animals never left alone long enough to know what they might choose. We gave them our faces, families and hungers, then called it kinship. Now they choose among the bodies we taught them to want.
Return if still animal.
