Textile has become one of contemporary art’s most fluent languages. In Tomorrow’s Sorbet, its familiarity is the trap.
Andia Coral Newton told me that her loom had belonged to an older weaver who could no longer use it, passing from one pair of hands into another. With it, Newton weaves a house thin enough to fold away, while Heidi Pearce fills the room with life-sized hounds whose dark fur carries small outbreaks of flame. Softness draws us closer. The fire has already learnt how to behave indoors.
Nobody leaves and the room goes on believing in itself. Denial begins here, in the quiet rearrangement of danger until it can live beside us, warm to the touch and almost companionable.
The metaphor gives itself up quickly and the flames can begin to feel like costume. Yet this ease has its own truth. Once disaster becomes familiar, it also becomes easier to furnish.
Tomorrow’s Sorbet keeps catastrophe within reach, where it can be stroked without disturbing the house. Tomorrow waits in the freezer, kept sweet by the same room already burning.
