War brought murder to the Bieszczady. Forced expulsions emptied its villages, and then the forest grew. The forest returned over former addresses. Wildness is the latest surface of the place.
Karolina Dworska spoke to me about her grandfather, a shepherd who came from Zakopane, and the world that still reaches her in England through dreams of diagonal hills and forests crowded with frightening figures. Her tiny photographs bring that country close enough to hold between two fingers. They feel like small pieces of evidence.
In U Dziadka, Dworska returns to the lamb she found drowned with her grandfather. Each time the memory passes through her hands, the lamb sinks further into wool and dream.
The tufted works give this uncertain inheritance a heavier body. In the summer heat, loose fibres filled Dworska’s studio as she moved around the frame, remaking the Bieszczady he knew inside the fog it produced. Each return brings the image back slightly changed.
Her mythic creatures occupy the gaps history has left, though their strangeness sometimes feels more settled than the small photographs beside them, which keep much of the forest hidden.
Dworska gives fog a surface and lets the forest feel the rooms beneath its roots.
