things shrugged into hiding

Faris Nakamura’s constructions seem to come from the space a life is permitted, shaped by the close pressures of family and rule in Singapore and the little room he found for making in London. In construction, allowance is the space left between parts so they can meet.

He cuts each form with a blade, painstakingly following the line until the material comes away, yet the finished object keeps almost no evidence of the hand. The narrower the allowance, the more exact the fit.

My wife called the sculptures organic punctuation, held flush against the wall like a room paused inside its own sentence. Their apertures bring the eye close and sideways. The body adjusts before the work gives anything away.

Bunga Yuridespita’s mirrored structure offers another kind of hiding, a room fitted to her shoulders that gathers its surroundings while withholding the body inside. I waited for the mirrors to catch me and found myself directed elsewhere.

The works meet more completely in this withholding than in the room itself. Someone compared Faris’s openings to James Turrell. Turrell lets the wall dissolve into light; Faris keeps light to a narrow allowance, a sliver of what the wall withholds. Bunga’s mirrors catch it only long enough to send it elsewhere.
