Art exhibition review by Drenched Co. – Amanda Seibæk: A BALLAD, SLQS Gallery, London

fifty-two hertz through a Doppler field

a body gathers in the listening

– Drenched Co.

At fifty-two hertz, a call entered human hearing. It crossed thousands of miles of ocean without giving up the body that made it, and from that thin register humans made an entire loneliness.

Amanda Seibæk found her whale while recovering from throat surgery, when speech had withdrawn into her body.  The story of the loneliest creature in the world had come to her from her closest friend in a Scottish pub, whispered across the small distance between their bodies. A BALLAD began here as one absence called into another.

Across Seibæk’s paintings, the I loses its outline, an imperfect circle briefly finding the certainty of a polygon. The marks move between organism and diagram, as the whale enters the wrongness of a silence.

Seibæk once loved playing the cello while resisting the written score. Here it seems the notation has snuck back as afterimage and sounding board, garbled into bronze alphabet through which another kind of call  learned to enter her Monet-haunted waters.

The whale’s loneliness partly belongs to us. The paintings hold the uneasy moment when another creature’s voice begins to sound like something we recognise in ourselves.
