At the breakfast opening, the soft-spoken Gao stood within a phalanx of well-heeled women, their shoes making a small architecture around him. The arrangement belonged to his paintings: one quiet figure made solitary by everything gathered around it.
If IF belongs to the lighthouse, then THEN belongs to the dog. If there is a light, somebody must require it. If there is a companion, somebody has already gone missing. Michael Gao paints inside this faulty consequence, where an animal becomes human at the level of the image.
Sea upon sky, lighthouse upon sea, dog upon everything. The landscape is sprayed into atmosphere, while the dog is masked out and returned later by hand. At the edge, allusion tilts into illusion. Poe left his unfinished lighthouse with a keeper, a dog and doubt beneath the tower; Gao continues from the blank day.
A lighthouse is solitude built for another person. The keeper disappears so a stranger can arrive. Perhaps doing the same thing night after night and expecting somebody to find land is love. Gao’s animals keep that repetition for us, looking outward while the white things beyond them become sea, cloud or the beginning of mountains.
The paintings sometimes understand their loneliness too well, repeating the dog until vigil resembles design. Yet their error holds. We lend the animal our absence, then call what returns companionship. Beyond the painted weather, light addresses a body it cannot see. The hound keeps it for whoever has gone missing.
