Exhibition Review - Orla Barry:'Breaking Rainbows' Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin till 5th Nov 2016.
the oral and the written."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "For me, Barry explores the ideas behind true orality - when sequences of words and symbols are coloured by the presence of bodies and powered by breath and pulse. Her installation uses the oral event and the nonlinearity of oral thought processes to forefront relationships, movement and presence through her lived experiences as a sheep farmer and artist. Fabulous!" -

Exhibition Review - Yinka Shonibare MBE: '...and the wall fell away' Stephen Friedman Gallery, London till 11th Nov 2016.
“the mockery was born
from misplaced embroidery
stitches
of traded thread"
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "In this exhibition, Shonibare's art is once again about 'purloined seduction or pretend authenticity'. To me, Shonibare's magic lies in his contextual use of wax batik textiles. The voluptuousness of his fabric and its garish patterns always seduced and was slow to the gaze. Each fold and weave of the material often played with you before abandoning you to confused signifiers. To me, meanings are woven into the fabric itself and do not simply translate into flat, vernacular patterns of African ethnicity. But sadly, the fold, pleat and stitch is no longer." - Jayzee

Exhibition Review - Marc Behrens: '«Phantoms»' The MART Gallery, Dublin till 22nd Oct 2016.
“To listen is to edit,
the raphsody of the wind,
to hear is to see,
its conditions of possibility."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "To me, Behrens is our guide to the auditory unconscious, to sound that we won't hear or can't hear, to the confused swarm of elemental noise. Behrens, through his expertise in montage and editing, introduces us to the contaminated pause, to the backdrop that reveals sound. In near silence, he sensitises us to ghosts, to notions of intent and to the sounds of our imagination. The exhibition is esoteric and sparse. It requires commitment to discern the artist in his compositions. He nudges us towards the infinite but it is lost upon us. It begs another look." - Raj

Exhibition Review - Willie Doherty: 'Loose Ends' Kerlin Gallery, Dublin till 19th Oct 2016.
“Leach out the vapors,
thaw time in forsaken places.
Wherever we remember,
it's far from history."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "Doherty's videos are to me a re-telling of stories and events from a hundred years ago, a new perspective on history that is a type of witnessing that is not testimony. The videos have a certain posthumous quality to them as they explore the past in a ghost like hallucination, not concerned about making any sense of it. Also Doherty films powerful subjects with violent histories, their intense disquiet having been absorbed and filtered into every frame of his videos, giving his signature restraint a certain penumbra of unexpected danger. I have watched these videos again and again!" - Raj

Exhibition Review - Thilo Heinzmann: 'To Be And To Be' Carl Freedman Gallery, London till 22nd Oct 2016.
“Something happened beyond the frame.
Something left behind.
Something reframed."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "Heinsmann's clever use of disjunctive, anachronistic elements made me think of a forensic enquiry into the Modernist project. His paintings are like 'petri dishes' used to culture the isolated craft and technique of modernism. Heinsmann substitutes the subjective and subtle process of discovery for the 'science'." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - David Korty at Sadie Coles HQ, London till 1st Oct 2016.
“Korty's unmoving mutating frenzy,
inserts imaginary mathematics
between the viewer it's already leaving behind."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "It seems to me that Mr Korty's new paintings have been 'datamoshed' through some sort of lossy compression algorithm. Indeed, over the years Mr Korty's evolving compositions have given in to compression and flatness and looking at them now I am reminded how compression reorganises the context, time and space of information and introduces certain artifacts that materialise the inherent character of the medium. Pushing the digital analogy further, I see pixelating, checkerboarding and macroblocking and perhaps, just perhaps, Mr Korty's paintings are a sort of a critique of today's perfect world of digital communication, a world of instant gratification." - Raj

Exhibition Review - Cathy Haynes, Nancy Holt, Hannah Lees, Zoe Paul, Claire Potter: 'Overlay' White Rainbow, London till 20th September 2016.
“There, all snarled up in a mesh,
smothering and sowing,
- an invoking."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "To me this exhibition is about matrices i.e. the environments or materials within which something develops, is cast or shaped. Here, there is everywhere evidence, of the Great Goddess, a medium between nature and humanity, guiding not the shaping of matter, but its resurrection. And these matrices, these 'situations', are especially embedded in Nancy Holt's multiplicity of images, in Cathy Haynes' forest of words and months, in Hannah Lees' tablets and altarpiece, in Zoe Paul's staging and Claire Potter's script. Subtle and fabulous. " - JayZee

Exhibition Review - Rajinder Singh: 'Cage of Deliverance' Wei Ling gallery, Kuala Lumpur till 30th September 2016.
“Rajinder blends the limit of the traumatised body against the sweep of erasure."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "Rajinder builds spacious cages in his paintings, free to roam about in, their quiet tranquility oblivious to the trauma transcribed onto their very walls. This terrorising calligraphy, unseen yet obvious, forms a salient component in Rajinder's 'simulation cages', strapped onto life's limbs, lancing together an algorithmic representation of the self. And to me, cage and limb, lulled by incense and candlelight, seem to fade quietly away into their dark, cavernous surroundings. " - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Golnaz Fathi, Jenny Holzer, Sayaka Ishizuka, Qian Jiahua, Ezzam Rahman, Melati Suryodarmo, Tao Hui, and Zen Teh: 'In Silence' Pearl Lam gallery, Singapore till 4th September 2016.
“Shipwrecked on silence,
seas tugging between us,
we hurl voices into distance,
waiting to hear our names."
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "Nyepi, Bali's "Day of Silence", catches on worldwide as 8 artists from across the globe come together to contemplate life beyond and within silence. Alone and separate, we leave our silences for the raging torrents of life, interacting with the world around us, willing a presence as we bruise and are bruised, before we turn once again to silence, desperately heavy and human. The cryptic inflected voices of Holzer, Fathi's motions of prayer, Rahman's intensely personal pleats and folds and Ishizuka's rice melodies especially stir in me memories of that unfamiliar sensation of silence, when the roar of life cedes and you can hear yourself think again. Fabulous." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - John Clang: 'The World Surrounding an Indoor Plant' FOST gallery, Singapore till 4th September 2016.
“Clang traces his mind around every image.”
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "In Singapore, John Clang renders projected photos of his family and friends in charcoal before rephotographing them. His exhibited images, several steps removed from his subjects, are to me an investigation into the magical powers of his camera, a tool to catch the real from the illusory, the substance from mere appearance, and perhaps even the good from the evil. In the end though the photograph as index merely reflects human subjectivity and error in the self reflexive production of art from art and becomes entwined with the whole problem of time. I didn't love them. " - FaSa

“Practical activity writes upon nature,
.. in a scrawling hand..”
- Drenched Co.
Quote by Henri Lefebvre "The production of space". 1991
Comment: "Andrew, to me, is above all an itinerant. The thread of his wanderings, the lines on which he conducts his life and actions is steadfastly entangled with his materials, his textures and his patterns. Through these fluxes and flows, aided by his particular sensitivity for the invisible reality around things, Andrew composes magical intricate spaces in his work. Exhibition Review - Lisha Bai, Ryan Lauderdale, Hannah Levy, Michael Jones McKean, Wyatt Niehaus, Kate Steciw and Chris Wiley: 'Dense Mesh' Carroll / Fletcher, London till 25th May 2016.
What more a conduit but a promise of a connection,
for a harvest of life in glitched consonants;
what else is a thing suspended in action,
but an ordered world in still dissonance.
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "'Dense Mesh' is a brilliantly conceived show with some extraordinary young American artists bringing into question philosophies which privilege the human being over things. For such a project, Flusser is an apt choice. He does not speak of a yearning for a return back to a humanist past but suggests we accept our modern apparatuses and learn from and through them to a new measure of freedom. The artists in this show attempt in their own way to break into and subvert their programming to expand the agency of things and to give primacy to creative movements through processes, flows and transformations. And, by so doing, they bring back life to a world of things and free them from servitude. I loved loved Ryan Lauderdale's constructions!" - FaSa

Exhibition Review - John Divola, Cyprien Gaillard, Beatrice Gibson, Michail Pirgelis, Daniel Turner: 'Under a falling sky' Laura Bartlett Gallery, London till 5th June 2016.
Under a falling sky,
crack history into a wreckage of words.
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "For me, this show builds on the conversations around the brilliant 'Drawn by its own memory' exhibition at the same gallery earlier this year. See our review here. How do we make objects talk to us and tell us things that might surprise us? In this exhibition, Divola leads a star-studded cast into the Benjaminian and Heideggerian project that wants you to consider the thingness of things by tearing them out of their context. When unanchored, objects pose new questions and bring about interesting new reinterpretations as they direct our attention to slippages in the text inscribed on the 'countenance' of 'nature-history'. Divola's diptychs and Pirgelis' plane parts are especially intriguing. Fabulous!" - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Jules de Balincourt: 'Stumbling Pioneers' Victoria Miro, London till 14th May 2016.
What purchase iridescence on a parting glance?
- Drenched Co.
Comment: "In de Balincourt's paintings I hear the familiar Nietzschean cry, "God is dead". And I marvel at how this artist uses humour to deal with the space that is left deserted, empty in His absence. de Balincourt's humour is ambivalent, casually delicate and fundamentally pessimistic and it invents 'festivals of atonement' and 'sacred games' to find new meaning in a godless America. And this without obscuring any of its ills. I love the way the artist makes me feel his stumbling presence in his paintings as he completes his 'chapters' in a flurry of mad inspired activity." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Tyra Tingleff: 'Grinding your teeth to keep out the wind' The Sunday Painter, London till 14th May 2016.
Behind Tyra's tendrils of pauses, silent ellipses.- Drenched Co.
Comment: "I first came across Tyra's paintings at the 2013 RCA graduation show and now as before, Tyra paints rare, truly abstract paintings that surprise you with her grounding and dissolving play with paint. She pushes her language beyond itself, constantly giving out possibilities into a void and stroke over stroke, layer over layer a world is disclosed to our consciousness...such is her play with language..and to our amazement, she keeps doing it, again and again. I love all of Tyra's paintings but I am especially fond of 'When I wear a swimsuit I just don’t swim'" - Raj

Exhibition Review - Lisa Oppenheim: 'Analytic Engine' The Approach, London till 15th May 2016.
Light accumulates until it finally is. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Ms Oppenheim's alchemical wanderings take me on a journey through and beyond Barthes' grand project in Camera Lucida. In her photographs, light filtering through thin slivers of a dead tree seem to cleave an image from the wood itself. And to me these photographs are like the "made-up face beneath which we see the dead", as they beautify and momentarily neutralise the forest spirits that press upon our contemporary angst so. I liked her weave best." - JayZee

Exhibition Review - Finbar Ward: 'In Absence' FOLD, London till 7th May 2016.
It moved, I swear,
with serious mouths,
endorsing codes,
plotting betrayal. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Finbar's work reminds me of the French artist Brig Laugier's reconstructions of the book as object. I see parallels with Ms Laugier's examination of the media specific term 'book' in the context of Roland Barthes essay "From Work to Text". In a time when few subscribe to a primacy of the medium, Finbar's art questions the limits of painting and the movement away from it towards the ubiquitous 'works of art' while sticking obstinately to his chosen language. I loved how he gave the gallery polygonal reptilian scales.." - Raj

Exhibition Review - Subodh Gupta: 'Invisible Reality' Hauser & Wirth Somerset till 2nd May 2016.
Gupta's pots are stained with secular rituals of the sacred. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "To me, Gupta's pots allude to the sacramental ordinary, the idea that our inner lives are inextricably intertwined with those of objects and perhaps something beyond, something unknowable. Gupta's pots, passing from one form to another in the fires of meals long past are here helpfully engorged by the artist for a closer look, in the heat of a different kind of attention. " - Raj

Exhibition Review - Jane Bustin:'Rehearsal' Copperfield, London till 20th May 2016.
In everything now, orange satin in small doses,
the reedy winds of soar and spin
in exhausted concentration. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Ms Bustin is first a painter. In her compositional arrays, she holds this as a constant while varying her medium. This she does perhaps as an experiment to explore media-specific valence or even to leave nothing to chance in an effort to achieve resonance through emergent materiality. To me, Ms Bustin's paintings are a glass harp of sorts- an echo chamber for the text that resides in and around her work, trying to strike the perfect resonant tune to carry beyond text and materials. Fabulous indeed! " - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Anna Barriball:'New Works' Frith Street Gallery, Golden Square, London till 7th May 2016.
Barriball's tracings are like iron filings sprinkled onto surfaces to trap their magnetic clamour and noisy porosity. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "I believe Barriball has found a way of touching that which is beyond the surface of a painting while being very much about the surface. Her impressions of matter reveals it in a heightened state, giving off a radiance of the unknown, the energies of things and life which have left their own unwitting impressions upon it, trapped along its converging valleys, its clingy ridges. But these approximations of depth and dimension come at a price - a necessary dullness in the very surface that reveals." - Raj

Comment: "Jesse Darling raids apocalyptic tips for a rubble of upset and rages anthropomorphic violence together in prosthesis and a serious business is done. Exhibition Review - Robert Cervera, Katarina Hruskova and Alix Marie:'Ichor' Danielle Arnaud, London till 10th Apr 2016.
Sluiced against the world, we offer it in perfect resolution. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "To me Cervera, Hruskova and Marie go beyond boundaries that gives us divergence and difference and entangle themselves with the dark spaces, the void in things. And here lurk shadowy presences that give off a fetid discharge of ambiguity, appropriation and bastardisation as well as the godly gold of connectedness, equality and harmony. Exhibition Review - Philipp Timischl:'2' Vilma Gold, London till 16 Apr 2016.
With Timischl, two outspoken agents square off to the illusion of zero sum. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Philip Timischl's '2' wonderfully betrays his need for binaries and various dualities even if he is only interested in the stuff that goes on between certain opposites. To me, Timischl's anti-theft gate keepers build vibrating boundaries and trigger-happy force fields around them. These affect you with a certain static that brings a jitter to meaning and form. Only clarity resides in the poles. All else, including the walls and images are behaving like thieves, all jittery and unpredictable. How very clever!" - Raj

Exhibition Review - Ariana Reines & Oscar Tuazon:'PUBIC SPACE' Stuart Shave/ Modern Art, London till 9th April 2016.
Is that a poem I see built into an erection,
or an erection written into a poem? - Drenched Co.
Comment: "In 'Pubic Space', I believe Ms Reines is once again commenting on f**king and modern media. Her written word, it seems, is reunited with its erstwhile miraculous origins and magical powers, especially in this delinquent modern age of word processors and the internet. Ms Reines' entropic text, creased and crumpled into its primitive medium, is here proffered as an offering of body and flesh that is to be eaten and drunk and consumed and ravaged by Tuazon's erect, fertile, entropic gods. The words can be best fully absorbed in just this manner. I loved them all again and again." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Jeff Zilm:'SOME SCREEN MODS' Simon Lee Gallery, London till 1st April 2016.
Zilm's paintings are spore-baths
germinating new vectors
in ghostly directions. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Zilm's paintings remind me of banged up reflective panels. But instead of the viewer, they reflect the noisy drama of Zilm's art. This is the ever so compelling 'transformission' from text (movie script), to performance, to technology (celluloid), back to theater (Zilm's purported process), to image and finally a return to text. To me, Zilm's emulsion dust is the noise added to a performance that adds to and remakes text or is taken away and suppressed by text. Wonderful!" - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Maria Taniguchi Ibid. London till 9 April 2016.
With Taniguchi, I discover a tally,
flashing darkly up a wall,
in a language of a transaction,
I do not mean to complete. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "In order to 'see' Taniguchi's wall paintings, I am infected with her obsessiveness. I am dangerously drawn to her brick sized microworlds, her microcosms within daunting macrocosms, brick on brick, line on line building to a vertiginous tally of hunkered down obsession. And then it all suddenly leaves me and I walk out of a gallery full of black paintings." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Mark Wallinger:'ID' Hauser & Wirth, London till 7th May 2016.
Wallinger places his hands to tend to the spectre of solipsism. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "At Wallinger's ID, the artist places himself in his works, evolving his 'I' to another level. Wallinger is in contemplation of self and wills us to participate. And perhaps in the midst of this contemplation, there is this idea of the human hand and its complicity in the evolution of our brains and culture and our contemporary digitally determined identities e.g. 'I touch, therefore I leave traces', leaving my mark wherever I go. (See Frank Wilson's The Hand). Fabulous." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Michael Joo:'Radiohalo' Blain Southern, London till 9th April 2016.
Mr. Joo's intersections are measured and transformed in moon-bright wings. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "To me, everything Michael does starts with the alchemical magic of Lunar Caustic (silver is linked to the moon). For instance, silver nitrate stains and is used to measure salt, to make mirrors and to aid analysis, all of which are connected to Michael's practice - along with ideas around cycles, processes, energy, measurement and boundaries. As with silver ions and photography, science and art intersects with magic in Michael's work and he returns time and again to all manner of divides and boundaries, to investigate the nature of objects, places and people. Fabulous!" - JayZee

Exhibition Review - Aglaé Bassens and Eric Oglander:'What You Can’t See' Revue Gallery, London till 27th March 2016.
Aglaé hangs an emptiness in a trespassing slack
as colour runs a stumbling presence. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "In the tradition of the best 'drab' poetry, Aglaé's paintings have little sensuous imagery and little need for histrionics. They dignify a quiet, intimate tone. And released from pretentiousness, noise and vulgarity, these paintings, as with Oglander's mirrors, have the potential of returning us to that odd cusp between thing and idea, wherefrom all poetry originates. I was bowled over by Aglaé's mural" - JayZee

Exhibition Review - Jan Pleitner:'Water for the Tribe' Kerlin Gallery, Dublin till 12th March 2016.
Charge your heart with paint
and rush its imprint through a
dragnet of emotions. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Mr Pletiner's young star is on the rise. I first saw his work in 2014, and now, as then, Pleitner's lines, his gesture, his pallete, reminds me of De Kooning's sinewy abstractions (see for instance Women 1 (1952)), highly energetic, all-action, all expression. With Pleitner I see a barren landscape of muscle and sinew, coiled, taut and tense, rigid and strained beneath the skin, torn down and rebuilt in a singular expiration of energy. You get involved with this energy, his emotions, his honest instinctual out-pour. Yet you wonder how much of it is honest, how much is performed emotion. Or does it matter?" - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Marie Jeschke:'Can't Remember Always Always' l’étrangère, London till 5th March 2016.
With Jeschke, I tug at crumpled fossils,
plots drawn from a moving landscape
to tease out the betrayal of memory. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "In her fresh and well put together little show at l’étrangère, Jeschke alludes to the altering of memory through cultural and natural effects over time. To me, Jeschke's work also suggests how a changing reference system of a given culture changes what we see and how we see. As codes of memories change, we cease to notice or alter the way we see certain elements in our environment. As well as being unreliable, memory is selective. For me, Jeschke wants us to consider how time and culture teaches us what to remember and what to ignore. I loved her aluminium totem-like sculptures." - FaSa

Exhibition Review - Bridget Smith:'The Eye Needs A Horizon' Frith Street Gallery, London till 3rd March 2016.
With Bridget, I tease a pause in slow time, from an 'I am all in and overdrawn'. - Drenched Co.
Comment: "Bridget Smith focuses on details that go into the spaces set aside for our leisure. Many of her photographs in this show (first versions seen in 1995 at Entwistle London) attempt to isolate some essence of these spaces, their minimal necessary features, to explore her interests in their aura and drama and what happens when she succinctly organises them into a picture. Bridget, for me, shows us a terrain where 'traumatic' and leisure dimensions merge, in the moments before the curtains open and the seats fill, a moment that forces us quiet from our 'stupefied and perpetual' activity, through its sheer press of darkness, sleep and limbo. Fab!" - JayZee
